She may have existed, or may have been based on an actual person or persons. The poem about her dates from the Age of Fragmentation.

Yes - one Disney movie, many Chinese television series, and many Chinese operas. I watched the Disney one in 1997 when it was released. A very strange transposition of American culture onto an ancient Chinese setting. Indeed, I don't think any Disney animated feature has ever seriously tried to reflect anything but American culture.

If you think that was strange, wait till you hear about Mulan 2 (already released, BTW).

Eh, I watched the second one simply because I couldn't fight my own curiousity. Obviously, all Disney sequels aren't nearly as good as the original, Mulan 2 was no exception.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

In essense, Mulan 2 stresses individuality and freedom of choice and talks about how bad arranged marriage is. Of course, most people today would agree with these two ideals but Mulan took place several thousand years ago...

Greeks and Romans considered women inferior to men. They owned slaves

They would never make a hercules movie about Hercules fighting against slavery

but! but but but, they make a Mulan movie about fiendish Chinese and their multiple wives

They might just throw in Spartacus into one of their animated movies ...
