I was reading Sun Tzu Art of War last night and as I got to chapter 13 "Employment of Secret Agents", statement number 22. ... It said, "22. Of old, the rise of Yin was due to I Chih, who formerly served the Hsia; the Chou came to power through Lu Yu, a servant of the Yin. " ... Does anyone know anything about I Chih or Lu Yu? ... Were they spymasters? ...

These are alternate names for Yi Yin and Lu Shang (Jiang Ziya/Jiang Taigong) - they were ministers and strategists, rather than spymasters. The point of the passage was just that good people on the enemy's side should be won over.
Also, it should be 'Lu Ya' and not 'Lu Yu' - there is a typo in some online versions. See http://unpress.bandersnatch.org/suntzu/art....html#chapter13

The dead have passed beyond our power to honour or dishonour them, but not beyond our ability to try and understand.

Yun,
The purpose of a good espionage operator is to gain the credbility w. their professional & social others.
Through trust and commitment, people will follow him or her.
Dr . Sawyer states on his web site, [ "Traditional records depict spycraft as playing a pivotal role and being widely practiced in China from its earliest dynasties, embodied by such figures as Yi Yin and the T’ai Kung. Sun-tzu penned his famous chapter on clandestine agents -- the first dedicated work on spycraft -- at the end of the Spring and Autumn period, ---"]
Recommend his book ["Tao of Spycraft"] highly.
Kind of dry but good winter reading.

Yun ... Good info. ... Thanks. ... I forgot Lu Shang was Jiang Ziya other name. ... I understand your statement on getting people to switch loyalty. ... Think it is mighty hard for them spies to convince people to change their loyality and follow him or her instead. ... But I guess that is why they get the big check. ...
