I was looking at a book on Yang Taiji and looking at western name of different moves. ... I have heard stories of how people come up with some of the names and some of the names are so funny that I spend more time laughing at the name than practicing it . ... I have two questions. ... What is the Name of your favorite martial arts move?

From my mantis system, my favorit' move is Monkey Stealing Peaches.
From my Hung Gar training, my favorite moves are "Hungry Tiger Capture Lamb" and "Single Tiger Leaving The Cave".

The other question is: what are da' standard names of the many martial art moves that one see in almost all styles of Chinese martial art moves?

Got no particular favourites, but here's a couple of names

海底捞月 hăi dĭ lāo yuè : Scooping the moon from the sea bottom. This term existed for both unarmed fighting style as well as swordsmanship, and recently applied to badminton as well. In fact, a similar game to badminton existed in historical China during the Ming Dynasty.

双龙出海 shuāng lóng chū hăi : Double dragons fly out of the ocean - a two pronged attack using the arms.

Incidentally, the terms in Chinese for moves mentioned earlier were
猴子偷桃 hóu zi tōu táo : Monkey Stealing Peaches
饿虎扑兔 Not sure about Hungry Tiger Capture Lamb, but 五形拳 (Five Forms Fist)'s 虎形 (Tiger) has Hungry Tiger Leap At the Hare.

That is Cool! ... Thanks a lot. ... In the Hung Gar Tiger Crane set, that move does exists. ... I have not learned the Wu Xing Quan yet. ... Was looking at the names of sword moves from different sets of different systems. Such cool names. ...

I really isn't so much the names as opposed to the technique. Alot of things in CMA shares the same names but a completely differnent in both principle and application.

Actually, that is from Taiji

A few, but among the people here, the answer "Wing Chun" would be better understood. And yes, Wing Chun does use it although you don't get to learn it until the Wooden Dummy.

Although I know this came in good intention, I would like to point of that Style vs Style comments are strictly off limits in this forum. Even well intended ones. So please be so kind of refrain from saying things like this again.

Isn't the Taiji version more like using "4 Liang (ounces) to deflect 1000 Jin (pounds)"?

Just thinking about it...I'm torn between the Wing Chun punch and the JKD straight punch.

The former is easier for me to master, but not quite the latter... sad.gif Practice...practice...
Wujiang
The are actually a number of punches in Wing Chun.日字沖拳,抽拳 and 牛角拳 are the only ones I can come up with at the moment. Which one are you talking about ?
Mok
I'm terrible with names, all I know is that it is the straight punch at chest level. no.gif

Yikes. *runs away*
Wujiang
That would be the ever lovely 日字沖拳.

And definately more lovely if it was executed by our ever beautiful Mok
Mok
I do try to practice as much as my limited memory allows me too. wink.gif I am also returning to the very very basics such as footwork, zha ma stance and the like, to start building up my qi again. It's been so long...

Presume you're lethal with the 日字沖拳.

Who cares, as long as you look smashing when doing it, it really doesn't matter. In fact, I propose Mok to perform the Xiaoliantou in a bikini during the Mid-autumn gathering.

Who's with me ?????

Eiiii...what's this fixation with seeing Mok in a bikini?????? laugh.gif

Ok...a concession. If you've seen Chris Yen on the cover of Inside Kung-fu, sporting a very modern-looking Chinese blouse... tongue.gif I could wear that instead. cool.gif Much more appropriate.

BTW...I'm not attending the Mid-autumn gathering...teeheehee...so no chance of that anyway!

It's probably a toss up between chopping palm, green dragon turns it's head, or white ape offers fruit.
