Prism of One:
Minimalist Abstraction by Nicole Woodford

Nicole Woodford’s paintings are expressive, dynamic and rhythmic; yet retain the beauty of Minimalism. Inspired by the ancient calligraphy of the Tang Dynasty in China, Woodford uses the gestural line to convey a myriad of ideas and emotions about the very nature of expression. Woodford states: “These paintings are personal, mystical. They carry with them my cultural heritage, my homeland and the sense of isolation which occurs when communication is broken.” By using subdued colors, Woodford emphasizes the movement of the painting and the action of her lines. Her brushstrokes are deceptively simple looking: a few movements of her brush convey insightful messages about the interconnectedness of life and the importance of personal expression. Nicole Woodford is originally from New Jersey, but is currently living and working in China, where the culture and history has profoundly inspired her art.
Nicole Woodford’s calligraphy paintings will be on display in New York in Prism of One, running from September 28 to October 18, 2006. The reception takes place on Thursday, October 5th, 6-8 PM at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street in Chelsea, New York.
