I have heard from several Hui friends who do not know each other that the reason they don't eat pork is because they descended from pigs. Is this really a part of Hui's official mythology or is it just folklore spread amongst the uneducated as an explanation for the halaal requirement? It would seem that the Han, who are fans of pork, would ridicule the Hui for not indulging in one of the Han's staple meats. An explanation that pigs were ancestors of the Hui would promptly shut up Hans who themselves revere their ancestors.

Interesting question, this never came to my mind even though I've always known Muslims don't eat pork.

There is one parallel comparision,India's Hindus don't slaughter cows or consume beef due to their belief of reincarnation.

But if Hindus don't slaughter cows/consume beef because of their belief of reincarnation, wouldn't their belief actually extend to slaughtering/eating all animals?

Seems to me the prohibition on the consumption of beef is more specific. The term "Holy Cow" comes to mind.

Can a Hindu expert confirm this?

^Cows are a sacred animal in India. I'm not sure about the details, but Muslims such as Huis don't eat pork because they think it's dirty because they eat their own feces. Well at least that's what my Egyptian and Persian friends told me.

A Pig is a despicable, disgusting, incestuous creature. why would some people confirm themselves as descendants of these kind of animal? Some weeks ago, I saw a clip in the net (either youtube or googlevids I cant remember) about the PRC govt's harsh treatment against Uygurs. The reporter interviewed an ex soldier turned taxi driver Han Chinese of what he thinks obout the Uygurs. Guess what, the driver replied candidly with a laugh that the Uygurs are descended from pigs and that's why they abstained from eating them! Note that Uygurs are not Huis and that means the insult is aimed against Muslims in general.

Another equally disturbing bigotry, and a parallel of this one, is a racial slur we got here in Indonesia that Chinese Indonesians (Yin du ni xi ya Huaren - 印度尼西亞華人) "looked like pigs" or "pig descendants" ranting.gif ...

Aren't the Hui Muslim? I am sure that they would not say that they are descendants of pigs as that would be a horrible insult to their ancestors. Both the Muslims and Jews believe that pigs are unclean animals.

How are pigs incestuous?

Hello every one. My very 1st post here on CHF.com.

Muslims and Jews don't eat pigs because in the days before Christ, pigs were kept in basements and pins near their sand/desert houses as a form of trash disposal and toilet rolled into 1. Everything kind of waste from old rotten fruits/vegetables , table scraps, anything organic including bad meat, human feces and urine were fed to pigs. So, I guess somewhere along the line, it was put into the Islamic and Jewish bibles as a prohibited practice.

I wouldn't eat a pig raise on a diet of garbage and human excrements either. But that is the thing, the pork I get are raised in huge pig farms on a diet of rice, wheat, corn and related products and they are delicious. That is great that Muslims don't eat pigs because being that they are the world's largest religion, that leaves a whole lot of pigs for me and my peoples. biggrin.gif

So I don't think it's a "sin" or an actual religious law of Muslims and Jews not to eat pigs; that if you do you'll go to hell or such. I think it was just an ancient recommended practice to not eat pork cause they were filthy and maybe considered low class if you did and it stuck ever since. A taboo if you will and a ridiculous one at that with todays farming practices.

I may be wrong, if any real Muslims might know, please correct me.
