P.S. It doesn't have to be from the Freer Gallery above either, if you have any good pics of Chinese art, then feel free to post them here regardless.
Publius
That's an amazing collection of on-line Chinese (and other) art that the Smithsonian holds--about 1890 images including several with historical background. I've been there for a few hours and have only browsed through a small fraction of it. Thanks for sharing.
Non-Han Nan Ban
No problem, Publius, it's my pleasure to share the goodness (lol). It's friggin amazing, though, so many different items and pieces of art ranging from the Shang Dynasty all the way to the Qing. Incredible.

Thanks, WangEnlai. It's been a lot of work with thumbsnap and imageshack, but after a long and arduous task of posting it here, at SMQ, shadowedrealm.com, and at AE forums, it's starting to look good. I've already got some great responses and inquiries in AllEmpires.

Glad to be of service,

It's preferred that we keep it in a strictly artistic fashion. However, if you'd like to post some pics of the siege and war machines that you're knowledgeable about, feel free to do so! It could still count as the 'crafts' part of arts. Lol.

Remarkable contributions, NHNB.

Just one little correction:

QUOTE
Ancient Eastern Jin Dynasty Landscape Painting original, by the master Luo Shen Fu (lived circa 317-420);

'Luo Shen Fu' (Rhapsody on the Goddess of the Luo River) is actually the title of the painting. It was inspired by the poem of the same name written by Cao Zhi, son of Cao Cao. The painter is attributed as Gu Kaizhi, but as is also the case with the Admonitions painting you thumbnailed and listed just before this one, the attribution to Gu lacks substantial proof and has been much debated by art historians.

Just one little correction:

'Luo Shen Fu' (Rhapsody on the Goddess of the Luo River) is actually the title of the painting. It was inspired by the poem of the same name written by Cao Zhi, son of Cao Cao. The painter is attributed as Gu Kaizhi, but as is also the case with the Admonitions painting you thumbnailed and listed just before this one, the attribution to Gu lacks substantial proof and has been much debated by art historians.

Thank you Yun, I tried to go back and fix the mishap, but now the post-editing option will not allow me to do so. It said something about too many pictures in one post.

Eric
Yun
Yeah, that probably happened because you made a few posts in rapid succession and they got merged into a single post by the system, but now the system considers that post to have too many images to be edited and reposted.

That's a program flaw that I've run into before as well.
Anthrophobia
Did you take all those pictures by yourself Non-Han Ban? It's a great collection.
Non-Han Nan Ban
@ Yun,

Yeah, I guess I'll just have to live with it then. I wish I could go back and fix it though. However, don't the site moderators have the ability to do so (I'm looking at you, moderators, lol)?

@ Anthrophobia,

No, I didn't take any pictures of these personally. The vast majority of these photographs are taken directly from the weblink in the first post to the Charles Lang Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. (I basically hunkered down with thumbsnap.com and imageshack.us for a very long time, saving pics to my computer, writing pic descriptions, providing web links, and providing thumbnails). The rest are just assorted pics from other sites that I thought would be interesting to add, pics of items and places that are obviously still within mainland China (like the monumental Leshan Buddha Statue, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Army, the various Buddhist pagodas, etc.)

Kudos to those cultural brigands of yesteryear for their thievery; it helped to preserve some valuable history.
I forget the psychological term for it, but the scenario when someone knows they haven't been a very good person in life, they like to sort of clean their slate by doing something nice for the community, like donating a bunch of auctioned purchases to a local museum, like Charles Lang Freer (a Detriot-based industrialist) did with these Chinese works of art (purchased from a Japanese Buddhist temple that had been under the control of a daimyo family for centuries).

Well, the Bhuddist would say it's karma, that it's cosmic justice; while the religious may say that Ye shall reap what ye has sown. I tend to be real intellectual and philosophical about it and focus on the fact that s.hit that goes around, comes around. Just their way of unloading guilt before their big reward, I suppose. But eventually to the benefit of the world at large so one can claim a silver lining to the ugly fact of historical theft.

Ralph

I can't remember exactly how all this stuff came into the hands of the Japanese originally, but I remember reading that it had been at least since the 17th century (I think), and a significant portion of their collection was sold to Charles Lang Freer around the turn of the 20th century (because the Japanese needed funds for the upkeep of their Buddhist temple complex and what not). I'm going to do a little research on that...

In the meantime, search around this link here: http://www.asia.si.edu/visitor/default.htm

And from this thread, I finally realized how extensive the Chinese collection in the Smithsonian is. Since DC is not that far away, you've piqued my interest. I may take a trip down there, that is, if I can convince Mrs Ralph about the importance or the scholarly value of such a trip. If not then I'll go with the gift shop angle... she always had a weak spot for shopping dry.gif

Cool, I've been meaning to head down there myself. I live in Fairfax, about 35-40 minutes away from D.C.
