But it's MUCH more common among Koreans and Manchu's then Chinese, who usually have round eyes.

Maybe we can divide Chinese into several parts, and native Beijinger both Han and Manchurian is not much different according to this feature at least in my eyes. We must accept that people would become more and more similar in certain solid area.
Minty
I think your mum looks South East Asian, considering many people are dying their hairs these days having brown or reddish hair would not really raised eye brows. There are Asians with brown eyes although many more have black eyes. I have brown eyes. Your dad however looks Chinese.

My grandmother has reddish dark brown hair but she definitely looks Chinese. My natural hair color is not very black, it’s kind of very dark brown and underneath the sun it kind of has reddish tones, but I definitely look very East Asian.

Yes, Your dad looks like Tungus, he has very North Asian/ Polar look

You have it the wrong way around. It's her mother that looks Chinese, her father doesn't.

Southern Chinese.

Northern Chinese.

The father looked Chinese to my eyes. Just realised that the eyes just are so small after Conan's post.
Well, I don't know what's the difference if he close his eyes and compare to other Chinese closing their eyes as well.

Under strong sunlight, I see many people's "black" eyes to be somehow brownish. So are the hairs.

And actually I've heard that some broken black hair may change color to reddish.

Sometimes people(like me) in a photo look like small narrow eyes due to the sunshine, but in reality these people can have broad eyes. However I insist that this feature is not a necessary case in point. Lao She(老舍) , a Manchurian writter, may tell it.
Minty
No I have seen people with black eyes, my eyes and hair are lighter than the other Chinese with black hair, black eyes. I was observing that in the hair salon in Malaysia when I went for my hair straightening treatment. Mine is one shade lighter than some, and there are ones similar to mine. Anyway I look East Asian, not all people think I look Chinese but all think I look East Asian.

My grandmother is in her 80s because of her reddish black hair instead of turning white hair or grey her hair turned brown!!!

My father's friends in their 50s many have grey hair or even white hair, my dad's hair is still black!

nope, pure black eyes doesnt exsisted, there are 3 genotypic eye colors(brown, green and blue). you think they are black, when actually they are just dark brown.

Eye color or eye colour is a polygenic trait and is determined by the amount and type of pigments, primarily melanin, present in the eye's iris[1][2]. Although there seem to be three genotypic eye colors (brown, green, and blue), humans and other animals have many phenotypic variations in eye color[3].

the eyes you've observered were either brown or light brown.

Seddon et. al developed a graded one based on the predominant iris color (brown, light brown, green, gray, and blue) and the amount of brown or yellow pigment present.[16]

and Most of the original inhabitants of Africa, Asia, and the Americas have brown eyes.

Hmmm, your mother seems to have a Higher Nose bridge than most East Asians I've seen. Both my parents hail from Fujian province. My mother has a fairly low nose bridge, as do I. sad.gif
Your mother also seems to have a strong looking Chin, which is a good thing IMO.

People say I look more like mum. I think I look like a convict, or one of those laborer women with rolled-up sleeves on communist propaganda posters.

Hey, you seem to share your father's wide cheekbones. LIke previous posters have said, shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I definitely wouldn't mind having a girlfriend look like you: tongue.gif

You are right about Mongols have dominant asiatic in physical features.
But there is fact that some blondes born in mongol parents. Mongols mixed a lot. Gene things makes some surprise.

OMG! icon15.gif Holy Sh!t !! icon15.gif Thats something I've never seen or heard before. But yeah, I guess it makes sense when you think if it in terms of Recessive/Dominant Gene theory, and the fact that migrations probably cause gene mixture.

If you didn't tell me, I'd have thought he was some Japanese guy, with an obsession with Blonde hair.

AFAIK in my hometown, toddler blondness dissapears when children grow up. If they are still blonde haired, then those children always got teased by their peers.

Eventually everyone will have gray hair. sad.gif

actually she does have a trace of "eurasian" features, although this is not really that unusual in chinese population...even among southern chinese there has been some admixture from the west over the centuries, such as arab and persian traders in southern port cities, but this influence is much greater in northern china, especially northwestern china (not surprising considering all the migrations and invasions that have taken place there over thousands of years)...i guess she may have some relationship to turkic peoples, such as uighurs in xinjiang (this is also true for my mother's family)...

She looks like every other southern Chinese to me. Quite similar to Chen Changlin, a well known musician.

BTW, western genetic contribution to the Chinese population is basically non-existent, so people should stop claiming European admixture in them.

My girlfriends hair is brown when placed under the light... but that doesn't mean anything
no really... Place almost any Asian hair under the sun... it'll turn brown...

One marked difference is OwlFolk's mother has a higher nose bridge. Her nose have a continuous slope from the forehead to the tip of her nose. It also appears that each of her eyes are longer, although it is difficult to tell from this picture alone.

Edit: Yes, I'm somewhat obsessed about the nose.

Thanks for the info. Besides genes, is there a corrolation between environment and eye colour ? For instance in china are the southern Chinese eye colour lighter than the northerners ?

I would tend to think more pigment in the eyes and skin (darker skin) is better suited in environments closer towards the equator.

However, I don't think we should be putting too much emphasis on the correlation between environment and physical traits anymore. With the kinds of transportation that is available, the modern conveniences that makes life easier, virtually anybody can end up anywhere and survive. You can have an albino man live in the tropics and still survive due to conveniences that are available.

and no,i wouldn't call that girl a 100% mongolian when clearly she doesn't look like your average mongolians. just face it,mongolia is right next to russia,it is logical to say that, one of her ancestor was a russian. in realty, the nomadic mongolians rather look the most asiatic in physical features like, small eyelids, flatter face, stocky build, thick straight hair, less body hair. those are not traits of caocassian.

DearCoolz, I've been with you on this one. Owls mother does have facial features that diverge from the typical "Mongolian Look".

Thanks, I got light brown eyes and my folks where originally from Guangdong. Guess somewhere along the way they may have migrated from the north.

Hmm, kinda far away to tell, but I did see some folks with higher noses. So I guess it's the eyes that marks someone as a native Chinese. And Yes, I'm talking about the Epicanthal fold. Some chinese have that fold receed up higher over the eyes, while others have it hang down more. I would say if the fold stays up higher, it gives a person a bright eyed look.

My mother has rounder, deeper set eyes than both my fathers' and mine combined, and they are light brown.

My father's family is originally from the area near Korea's border. They were Manchurian.

I just phoned my mother and found out that I have an uncle who was born with red hair and hazel eyes. His beard is still red. What is going on here?

Will someone teach me something about recessive genes?

Well according the Chinese histories, their are tribes people that call the Wusun that lived in nothern west of china that have red to blonde, anh green to grey eyes. Their also another groups of tribes that have that same characteristic, that lived in the north eastern of mongolia, near the Sibeiria border. Both of these tribes belong to the Dingling group, these tribes had been in living China anh other parts along the outer northern border of China. They been livingng in these area, as long as the Mongol anh the Han did...

I think that you have a very good looking family.

People from Zhongguo (China) can have various appearances. Over a 5,000 thousand year history, we Hua people absorbed many diffiernt groups of people. I have seen Hua people with high nose bridge, deep set eyes, red/brown coloured hair. That is just the way we are.

Apart from you and your family, the most beautiful Hua women probably come from Hangzhou.
