I'm really not sure if this is the right forum to place this topic under, or if anyone can help me out.

I am trying to determine a possible ancestor who was buried in Shanghai, and don't know who I can contact in Shanghai to find out this information. I have written to every British agency there is and no one can help me. I was finally asked to contact Shanghai directly, to see if anyone there has some answers.

This is the original email I had sent out a few months ago, regarding this issue:

"My name is Dean Gui, and I was pointed in your direction by a Graham Earnshaw, who moderated a site pertaining to (amongst other things) British ex-pats in Shanghai, China, http://www.talesofoldchina.com/soong/soong.cfm.

On the site there is an image of a gravestone belonging to a Johann Hartwig Martin Noodt, buried in Shanghai. I am a descendent of the Noodt family, although my surname is Gui; but I have been researching my family history, almost in vain. I know my Great, great grandfather ended up in Shanghai possibly from Germany, and my own family eventually fled Shanghai in the 1940's, ending up in Hong Kong.

The fact that I came across a Johann Hartwig Noodt buried in Shanghai is strange in itself, as no one
in my living family seems to know who this person was.

The Noodt name is not a common one, yet trying to find the link to my hetitage seems to have become a daunting task.

Mr. Earnshaw was unfortunately not able to provide me with any further information, other than you as his
only bet. If there is any way you can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Dean Gui"

If anyone can be of help, I would appreciate it.

The grave "Johann Hartwig Martin Noodt" seems to indicate two persons (just a guess):

1. Johann Hartwig

2. Martin Noodt

A certain Herr J.E.H. Noodt of Shanghai wrote a couple of interesting letters to Meher Baba in India in 1039. These were published in the Meher Messages for that year. He was it would appear a spiritual seeker of some discrimination.

Hi Geoff,

It's been a while since I've visited this site, as I've had other projects I needed to attend to. I was very interested in this JEH Noodt that you had mentioned. Do you have any other information on him? I was not aware of any other Noodts who were ever in Shanghai.. althohgh I know there was a very famous lawyer by the name of Noodt back in the 11th century.

Cheers.

Dean

Hi Dean,

I was interested to note this exchange.

I know nothing about this JEH Noodt of Shanghai. I can, however, add
a sort of explanatory footnote regarding Geoff's literary citation. The
"Meher Message" was a periodical publication, based in India -- the first
periodical magazine or journal devoted to the late Indian spiritual figure
Meher Baba.

Regarding the Meher Message -- the periodical in which the noted letters
of JEH Noodt were published, as noted, in India in 1939 -- one may likely
find some bit of information e.g. in the extensive, multi-volume biography
of Meher Baba, called Lord Meher, available online here:
http://www.lordmeher.org/index.jsp

-- although it would take a meticulous search (using advanced features of
the said website's search engine). Searching for "Noodt" regrettably bring up
nothing, sorry to report.

cheers,
David
