Hello. Do any here know how to use stone locks? What are the different exercises that you can do using stone locks? I want to start weight training but I do not like the modern methods because each exercise just targets a certain muscle. But triditional chinese methods works the entire body at the same time. Please post any stone lock exercises you know here. Thank you
Wujiang
There are actually a number of ways to use them and it is really dependent on what system you are practicing which in turn dictates what kind of physical developement you require.

For example, you can hold them in front of you with a straight arm and draw a figure of eight in mid air. The same can be done with just the wrist. Be careful though, if those are seriously heavy ones, you can risk injuring yourself in the process.

Do you know the history of the locks? When where they first used? What dynasty used them the most?

I've read that they have been used during the Han Dynasty. Is this true? Did the Song Dynasty troops train with locks?

Did the locks have a special purpose before they were used for weight training? I know they are called locks because their shape was based upon chinese padlocks. Who made and sold these stone locks?

Hi,

If I had a scanner I could send you some pictures along with the exercises. This is an exercise that is mainly used for hand power and strength.

The stone lock is a very common training aid in the chinese martial arts, especially in the southern styles which emphasize hand techniques. A stone lock (Shyr Suoo) is a stone shaped like a chinese lock usually weighing from 30 to 60 pounds. The stone lock is generally used to train catching speed, strength and the coordination, wrist and arm. The practitioner swings the lock, throws it up in the air so that it spins and then catches it by the handle. There are many training techniques, but since stone locks are not readily available in the Western world, teachers are not inclined to show these exercises.

However, even without a stone lock, you can still use the same principles with a brick to train your grabbing and catching speed and power. In brick grabbing training, use a brick which weighs about 20 pounds, and whose width is apprpriate to your grip. There are several methods of training:

DROP GRABBING:
Drop grabbing is the easiest way to train with a brick. Stand in a horse stance and hold the brick in front of you. Lift the brick and then drop it, catching the brick with both hands before it hits the ground. When you are used to the weight, use a heavier brick, uo to 50 pounds or more.

I have a few more but I will be able to send these tomorrow, I will try to get my hands on a scanner to send you the rest. There is also the Staff and Swinging Weight Training which I will tell you more aboutr tomorrow.

I certainly hope that this information is useful.

Have a great day

Wow, throwing and catching 30 - 60 blocks?! Sounds very difficult. I would imagine Iron dumbells could serve the same purpose as the Stone Locks. I don't know where anyone could actually find a Brick that weighs 50 lbs or more, unless you are talking about Cement blocks.

I won't recommend the throwing and catching for beginners, injury to an unconditioned wrist are quite possible.
One should first build up some level of basic strength using non-throwing methods before moving on to throwing ones.

We use a bag filled with sand in a similar way. The bag is about 10K or more with the top of the bag wrapped in rope to make a handle. Beginners start in horse stance picking the bag up and putting it down. After some time you can try releasing the bag and catching it. After a longer time you can play catch with others. The traditional CMA weight training is always designed this way to slowly increase power and the possibility of random interactions. The bag is less predictable when thrown, and even less predictable when thrown by someone else.

In Baji Quan we throw Hessian bags filled with iron sand. The first bag I was given weighed 15 kg, and I still enjoy training with it. We don't just use it for catching speed/power but also to train some of or whipping motion as we throw it.
