The original Xia people lived in what is now Henan. But a major question in Chinese history is whether the Zhou people were a branch of the Xia people, or more closely related to the Rong or Qiang peoples of the west (i.e. Shaanxi-Gansu).

The Qin state was originally situated relatively close to the Zhou capital, but got 'left behind' when the Zhou capital moved east to Luoyang. Thereafter it absorbed many Rong groups in the area. Some have said that the Qin rulers themselves were Rong, but evidence for this is lacking. It is also not clear at all whether the Rong and the Qiang were closely related.

Why would you think so? As far as we can tell from Chinese sources, the 'Yi' of Yunnan (who are actually a very diverse grouping) have always been in Yunnan. They have no origin myths about coming from north China.

No. The Tuoba Xianbei and Yuwen Xianbei later came up with myths (in the 5th and 6th centuries AD) about being descended from Yandi/Shennong and Huangdi respectively, but it is clear that the Donghu/Xianbei culture originated independently and was not a Xia offshoot.

Which Yue are you referring to? The Yue of Zhejiang, or the Hundred Yue of Fujian-Jiangxi-Hunan-Guangdong-Guangxi?

hi,

just to flash back to one topic we were discussing sometime agor.. the Qin and the 东夷 Dongyi connection...

people did discover while excavating the tomb of Qin Jinggong (秦公1号大墓) in the 70s a inscription that invoked 高阳 aka zhuanxu for blessings. thus whether mythical or not, it did show the Qin did regard zhuanxu as their ancestor, as recorded in the Shiji and hence an eastern origin for themselves..

there were also quite a fair bit of Ying赢 peoples left in the Huai-Shandong region, 徐 xu, 风 feng, 黄 huang, 莒 ju etc.. it will be hard to dismiss their relation to the qin and zhao

Let's take a step back and assess what are the sources of evidence for the claim that Zhuanxu/Gaoyang was originally a figure from Eastern Yi mythology?

An interesting piece of info is that in AD 294, when the Murong Xianbei chose Daji (now Yi county in Liaoning) as their new capital, they supposedly claimed that it was the site of Zhuanxu's old capital.

i accept that even with the proof of the qin regarding zhuanxu as their ancestor, it is hard to prove that they were originally eastern people..after all, the xia, the qin/zhao, the chu all claiimed to be linked to zhuanxu

in any case, we must somehow explain the wide dispersion of Ying赢 nations on both the east and west. the Yi of the Huai region has evidently been there for a long time, definitely traceable to the shang period but it would seem also that the qin people had been located west of the zhou plain for quite a while too.. qin s allegedly rong connection seemed to be related to the fact that they once resided at quanqiu (i.e. dog hill) and widely intermarried with the quan rong

btw, what was the basis for the Murongs to regard Daji as zhuanxu s capital?

The Miao, Qiang and Yi share many cultural similarity from clothings to religious practices. They may have somewhat influenced one another in ancient time. Many Hmong folklores and mythology usually talked about the Ancient Shua(may have been chinese) and the Man who are known as the Yi. Within the Miao and Yi groups composed of hundred subgroups and etc...

Some Miao are actually Yao, Zhuang and Dong but are classified under Miao.
Many ethnic groups that are assigned by the National Names sometime do not belong to that Ethnic Stock.

I am confused on where Chinese Anthro and Historians got these things from but as a Miao College student who study linguistic and ethnic studies, people are classified due to their similarity in language, culture and origin(folktales)etc...
