When I was little, my parents told me to not point at the moon because the next morning, I'm gonna get a cut in my ear. It happened to me! HAHA. It really did. I talked with some of my friends and they said it happened to them too.

Just last year, my brother, who's in college, told me about some of his foreign exchange Chinese friends. He told me that he and his friend were talking about something and then his Chinese friend pointed at the moon. My brother was like, "hey don't point at the moon," then the Chinese friend was suprised and jumped up and said "Heeeeeey! My dad told me the same thing. I pointed at the moon and the next day, i got a cut in my ear!" That was funny and i found it really cool. I'm Hmong by the way, and I thought it was really cool how Chinese and Hmong have the same story. Well, its not really a story or myth but yeah...

I was wondering if anyone else with a different ethnicity have the same story? If you do, can you post and tell us about it and what ethnic you are?

Also, I would you guys post some of your culture's stories and myths?? I think that it'll be really neat if someone finds out that some different ethnic group also have the same or similar stories as they do.

All I know is that in EVERY culture(either is Asian, European, Indians, Africans. etc) there is ALWAYS a dragon involved. May be in different forms, but always a Dragon. Like the chinese dragon who brings rain, or the medieval dragon who kidnap princesses. Or may be the indian dragon who is said to protect the village. In the end, dragons are in different parts of the world that's not even connected!!!

The Hmong and Mien prohibit pointing to the moon. According to Hmong mythology, Baby Moon wanted milk and I guess the Hmong women didn't want to breastfeed Baby Moon so he or she got very angry and cursed the Hmong People. Many Hmong do not point to the Moon. My little brother pointed to the Moon and was badly cut from the ear.

Dragon exists in the Hmong folktales and many Hmong believe dragon actually exists. There are two types of dragons according to the Hmong elders. The River Dragon and Land Dragon. River Dragon are considered the evil one while Land Dragon are considered a luck if you see them.

Red is the symbol of death to some Hmong Clans.

Oh wow! I haven't heard this myth in such a long time....My mother use to tell me the same story that if you point at the moon...the next morning you're going to get a cut on your ear. I didn't believe so I pointed at the moon and indeed it was true...the next morning I had a cut under my left ear. This myth...I believe it and learned my lession never to point at the moon again smile.gif

You get a cut on your ear for being gullible, it is the heavens' punishment for listening to everything you hear that is why the ear is cut. If you point to the moon and your ear does not get cut, it means you are no longer gullible. It mostly happens to kids, but if the kid wasn't gullible to begin with he or she won't get cut. So, try it again and tell us what happens. wink.gif

True, it is shared within the Mienh culture as well.

- Any Hmong here familiar with Hmong folklore(s) entitled, "Creation, Flood, Naming Story" and "Why People Eat Three Meals a Day and Why Doodle Bugs Roll Balls of Dung"; from the book, Folk Stories of Hmong: People of Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.

A few of my favorites because they were almost identical to ours.
