yes, 拍 would be a more correct word i think, but 打 'ta' is almost never in use (personally i have never hear 'ta' even in operas) in minnan, and p'a? will always replace the function of 打 in all areas.

there s a similar case with 'kao' (reach) which is used to perform the function of 到 (cantonese have it too, and i m not sure what is the original character for it)

I've seen it written as "遘", though the meaning is not "to reach" but "to meet".
That reminds me of English "to meet/reach (a target)".
I also observe similar phenomenon on Cantonese 轉 "to turn" (to rotate) -> "to change". (to turn can also mean to change in English)...

i speak teocheo also. i can understand some word from the translation.

teocheo is major chinese dialect in west borneo, especially in Pontianak. the other major dialect is hakka and it's variant, singkawang hakka which is i think only exist in singkawang.

i trial to give you the teocheo version, but i don;t know is it the romanization correct or not. i also borrow mandarin's 4 pitch for it.

i'm not Diu Chiu Nang, but out of curiosity...what makes it different from Hokkien? Does it have some similarities with Cantonese dialects or Hakka..due to it's close prox. to those communities.

comparison is a bit difficult it really depends on which form of hokkien you want to compare.. for example singapore hokkien absorbed quite a few of the tone and characterics of teochew.. (while teochew absorbed hokkien vocabulary) .. if u just compare xiamen and shantou then:

1. phonology

teochew is somewhat simpler without -t and -n endings.. (in fact my grandmas dialect only had -k and -ng endings beside the nasalised vowel and glottal stop) also most varieties lacks complexed dipthongs like '-ie' like and the 'ø' (as in cantonese 信)

on the other hand, m and b + ng and g are for most versions not differentiated in hokkien, but they are in teochew (as well as hainanese)

2. vocabulary

there are quite a few words in teochew that seems to be derived from or of the same source as cantonese .. at the moment i can only remember t'oinN (see).. also because of different administrative divisions, the literary languages for both were rather different

潮州湘桥好风流 (tie chew xiang kie haw huang liew)
十八梭船二四洲 (zap boi soh zoon zee see chew)
二四楼台二四样 (zee see lau tai zee see yei)
两只鉎牛一只溜 (nor jia sair goo ji jia liew)

it reminds me of my childhood, when my grandma carried me on her back and sang this song.

Haha that's what a lot of people say about Teochew, cos sometimes very melodic, you can be surprised at how coarse language in teochew can come out sounding like a song haha.
