This lecture, delivered at Harvard by the French scholar Francoise Aubin in October 2006, reviews the academic legacy of Joseph F. Fletcher Jr. (1934-1984), a very influential (but now little-known) US expert on the history and cultures of the Mongols, Manchus, Uyghurs, and Chinese Muslims ('Hui'). Aubin also mentions the work of various other prominent scholars in this field. The lecture is a fascinating read, and will be highly educational to anyone with an interest in Inner/Central Asian and Chinese history who wants to move out of the 'Han-centered' perspective.
