Hi everyone. I have a term paper I have to write for a Humanities course that covers only western histories. I got permission to write a paper on one of the cultural elements of Tang China: Art, language, etc. Could anyone recommend some good books both on general/specific Tang histories? Thanks.

Hello,

For political and institutional history especially, the Cambridge History of China vol. 3 Sui and Tang China volume is a good reference but too much material for you to read through probably.

For social life during the Tang, see Charles Benn, China's Golden Age: Everyday life in the Tang Dynasty (2002).

For an interesting view of the relationship between Tang China and the "outside" world as seen through the consumption and imagination surrounding exotic imports, see Edward Schafer, Golden Peaches of Sarmarkand (1985).

Good luck!
