A while ago, I read a martial arts webpage that said the following:

QUOTE
In the Song Dynasty, traditional Chinese martial arts were divided into 4 great sects : Chi , Bo , Chuan, Wen and ten great boxing styles : Hong, Liou, Zhi, Ming, Mo, Tan, Zha, Pao. Hua and Long. Chuojiao is often referred to as belonging to that of the Wen Sect and of the Zhi boxing style, therefore often referred to as Wenjiaquan or Jiu Zhizi.

Is this true? I have heard Wen family boxing mentioned as the parent style of Chuojiao by noted martial artists before, but never in a grouping such as this. Where these four sects and ten fists real stuff? If so, what were the characteristics of each sect and fist style?

I just now read the thread about Martial sects in history. I imagine the "Hua" boxing style mentioned above is in reference to Huashan, which as Wujiang explained, has little to do with martial arts, but qigong.

Hello ghostexorcist,

Do you happen to have the link to that site?

The quote in question is from the first paragraph. The stuff about Zhou Tong and the water margin bandits is of course purely legendary.

I will not comment of the validity of that site.
But I will say this, I was among the first members of Wugong forum. And thus has left in the same spirit as leaving 3kingdom.com.

I realize the site is not very scholarly, but I just want to know if anyone else has heard of the 4 sects and 10 fists. I take it you don't know or you've never heard of it?

Actually, I have. But I don't appreciate provocative tones.
And no, Huaquan does not mean Huashan Pai

Provocative tones? What have you heard about these various styles?

ghostexorcist,

Thanks for that link.

Sometimes one can find little gems of truth in the most unlikely of places. It is always wise to observe and keep an open mind to everything that one witnesses even if a little dubious at times. Hmmm...'huaquan'...sounds oddly familiar to the Fa Kyun or 'Flower Fist' styles of the southern circles. But, I'm just speculating on that one. g.gif

Unfortunately, this is not the case.
