I've been reading some interesting accounts of this battle, in which overwhelming Chinese units destroyed a full battalion of the British Gloucestershire regiment, which had been ordered to hold the line to give other U.N. forces time to regroup.

This is Korean war isn't it?

Yes, it was a battle in the Korean War, just a couple of months after China entered the conflict on the side of North Korea. The U.N. forces were still reeling from the shock of the surprise Chinese attack.
