I am especially moved by the story of Yuan Chonghuan's tomb. Yuan was executed by Emperor Chongzhen in late Ming dynasty. After his death, no one wanted to collect his body because Yuan was considered a betrayer by the court. However, a soldier of him knew that Yuan was innocent and he knew that Yuan was a real hero indeed. The soldier's family name is She(佘). He collected Yuan Chonghuan's dead body and buried it in his back yard. He kept this secret ever since. Mr. She told his decendants to take great care of Yuan Chonghuan's tomb after his death. Therefore, Yuan's tomb was well preserved due to the protection of his family.
After the foundation of PRC, the 17th decendant of Mr. She, Mrs. She Youzhi(佘幼芝)took charge of the tomb. Everyday, she will sweep the tomb twice in order to show the respect to the hero. In 1999, the local government wanted to widen the street and demolish the houses along the street. Mrs. She made every effort to protect, and finally the tomb was well preserved by the government. In 2002, the local government renovated Yuan Chonghuan's tomb and opened it to the public as a museum. She Youzhi is now the manager of the museum. The ticket price is 1 yuan, or $0.13. Till now, it is the 377th year of Yuan Chonghuan's tomb! The official address of this tomb is: Inner Guangqu Gate, East Huashixie Street(北京市崇文区广渠门内东花市斜街).
