In china, most history books was printed by government. The story in the book printed by government was called 正史(zheng4 shi3). But there's many folk history books called 野史(ye3 shi3) writed by the common people.
one story in 野史:
乾隆(qian2 long2) is not the Han(汗) nationality. He is not a son of 雍正(yong1 zheng4) and.......
......
......
There's many historys in 野史。
I contact many interesting historys which was never recorded in government history book.
Are these historys true? Who knows.
Bye the way, this is the first post in CHF. I love this place.
Very true.
Please check to see if your local (home town libraries or tongxiang association's 同鄉會 libraries) have any your tongxiang's personal memoirs from by-gone eras. Sometimes, those memoirs would have very interesting information left over from ancient times. These memoirs would be in the forms of Classical Chinese and traditional writings, so you will need to be able to read the traditional Chinese and understand Classical Chinese as well. In addition, I have found some very good mainland Chinese books in your libraries, especially the college level, and museums as well as in bookstores selling to college students and professors. Unless you really want to study such things in details, I think the current books in mainland China are NOT as uninformed as you think!
I do understand where you are coming from. When I was growing up in Taipei, Taiwan has martial law as well as strong censorship laws, and I have felt like I was both blind and deaf!!! However, I still get to see many interesting books in used and regular bookstores as well as my father's own and his friends' personal libraries. Now, if you go home and ask your own parents and grandparents and older uncles/aunts and cousins (even your friends' or teachers' parents and grandparents if you dare and they are willing), I will bet that you will find a lot of those books you are interested in. Believe me, I really, really found some extremely interesting books in Taipei's used bookstores and my father's personal libraries!!! Some of the books were KMT's censored books by authors (for example, 柏楊) who were in jails for political reasons at the time I found the books and read them!!!
And I hope you do know the political and legal implications of this, right?
