I am aware of the expeditions of Marc Aurel Stein and Sven Hedin in the Taklamakan early last century.

Does anyone know of more recent expeditions in this area? There was a Sino-British team that crossed it from West to East across the middle of the desert. I am interested in any exploration of the desert itself rather than travel around the edges.

Surveying has been done across in the Taklamakan when a new highway was built right across it from Korla towards Minfeng and Qiemo (Cherchen).

No new ruins were discovered while the highway was built.

Of the major known ruins of Loulan, Miran and Niya. Both Miran and Niya have now been surveyed and its structures suggests a Tibetan influence.

A great blog of some travel pictures around the Loulan area. Although from a geographic perspective this area is not exactly the Taklamakan but the Lop Desert to the East of it.

Thanks. You wouldn't know of any sites in English would you?

Also, I am very interested in expeditions as well as excavations.
