The end of Qing dynasty saw just the rise of 2 heros Yuan Shikai and Sun Yat Sen.

There are a lot of warlords at the end of Qing dynasty and during the republic of china. Just like the Three Kingdoms except with guns.

I found the names of the warlords on Wikipedia:

How did these warlords get their weapons and raise their army? How did the warlords attract men to them and get their wealth from?
ShingenT
many of them are former Qing Bei Yang navy leftover generals thats how they are able to get their hands on weapons, more Bei Yang navy leftovers.

How did they manage the economy in the areas that they controlled?

Did they trade with each other at the "national" level or the merchants did the trading?

Did they allow merchants to travel freely to other warlords controlled area and did they allow merchants from other areas to enter their territory easily?

Did the warlords issue passports to their people?

If at first, the warlords did not have a territory, how did they carve out an area for themselves? Maybe could quote couple of examples?

What was the army strength of each warlord?

Which warlords controlled the agriculture lands of China?

The word 'attarct' implies some kind of voluntary decision, whereas i am sure that some soldiers were coerced to fight, due to the dominance of the landlord and warlord class. Nice questions to be asking though.
