Hello! Thanks for looking,I'm trying to figure out what this says, along with any other info I can gather, the fan is in a sealed container with the name

"Hsien Feng 1851-1862" attached to it.

its a metallic gold color with birds and flowers on one side and very pretty calligraphy on the back.

Any info would be wonderful as well as tips to learn more about this art,I have a few other fans and items to decipher but I know very little about them, any web resources or tips would be very appreciated.

thanks a lot for your time!

Hi, the name is of Emperor Xianfeng 1851-62. Hard to tell from the photos if genuine of the period. It does look a little too crisp and fresh. The fan is of vey nice quality but the pictures are not clear enough for authenticating age.

Hi there. The text on the back comes from Yang Xiong's Fayan (Exemplary Words). It is a selection of famous sayings from various chapters. It includes the celebrated comment on Yang Xiong's passion for creating fu in his youth, which he dismisses as simple "insect-carving" in his later days.

Also, but I may be wrong here, the second row of the inscription on the painted side seems to include info on the date (壬子春日), which would be 1852.
