right now i have no criteria, anything would do
but try to keep it out of hollywood productions.
I am pretty sure anyone who is a proper war film nerd would already have seen all the American made movies.

Hi ShingenT,
Sounds like a nice project, but very big! So just a few questions to get us started... Are you planning to list American movies as well at some point? By "foreign," do you mean all non-American films in all languages, or only films that are available in English translation? Are you interested in wars in the ancient world, or only in, say, wars that involve firearms? And how do you want to define "war": armed conflicts between states, civil wars, guerrillas, all military operations? Finally, are you interested in stories that take place against the background of a war (like Gone With the Wind, for example), or only in films that are directly about a war? Once we know the scope of your project, we can probably contribute to it more efficiently!
Cheers,
Madalibi
EDIT: I see that people have already posted answers as I was slowly writing my post. Well, you can still see if you have any answer to my questions.

I haven't really decided yet, I am just trying to get some brainstorming,
I think anything with a background to war is fine, using war as a setting.
Any period would do for now, once we have a thing going on it would be easier to sort them by nation, period, conflict.
Maybe we should add American/Hollywood war films to another list so we can check ourselves.
This is mainly to help people find rare materials on some conflicts that are unknown by the English speaking public.

Hi all, I agree this is a big subject and no doubt there are many outstanding movies from many countries. The problem is many people have seen movies mostly from their own cultural film library. No doubt there are many great foreign language war movies I have never seen and this applies to everyone. I think this would be a great topic for posters to list their favorities and perhaps then we could narrow down a list of some trully great movies from everywhere.
A few of my favorites
THE BIG PARADE. American silent movie from the 1920's.
GERMANY, YEAR ZERO. Roberto Rossolini's film on immediate post war Germany 1947.
STALAG 17. Very entertaining and gripping story of prison camp life.
FULL METAL JACKET. No hold barred brutality.
DR STRANGELOVE. Black humour on the cold war.

Hi,
May I add some good war films from Russia, for anyone curious and able to find them.
Ninth Company (девятая рота), this is recent, based on true story of Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan, really worth watching.
Blockpost (or checkpoint maybe, or something such) (Блокпост in Russian) this is from a few years ago, about the war in the Caucasus, also interesting.
And if anyone ever had the patience for it, I don't know if it exists in English, but there is a fantastic old tv series about WWII, made in 1970s on the KGB's orders, to promote the positive image of Soviet spies. It is called 17 moments of spring (17 мгновении весны) and is about a Soviet spy, Shtirlitz, undercover as a Nazi. It is a real classic here and is really part of the popular culture. It is also simply very good.

right now, I am wondering if I should throw Asian movies into the mix or just start another thread for it.

Saving Private Ryan is my favourite one.
Ivan's Childhood (Иваново детство) is a very famous movies about a yuong boy in Eastern front. It has been admired due to the phenomenal performance. You may want to find it. It is a Russian movie though.

I think it might be good for our members to expand that wiki list.
It would save us a lot of trouble.
