Hi all, can the art appreciators on the forum tell me something about this landscape painting? Painted on silk and shows signs of great age. Appears to have being remounted at least once. Has plenty of age wear, worn edges, cracking and darkening. I have posted a positve and negative image. Will post more details later. Thankyou

True relic of landscape painting by Yuan dynasty artist Huang Gongwang, one of the 'four masters' of Yuan dynasty painting. I never saw this one before. But he is most famous for landscapes, like 'dwelling in the Fu Chun mountain', probably the best known one.

Thankyou Yizheng. This painting belongs to me and I knew it was attibuted to Huang Gongwang. I have not researced the painting so I know little else about it. However my instints make me believe it is most likely a copy by a later artist. It is certainly very old. Perhaps Ming era. As far as I know Huang was reputed to only have made a 100 paintings which about 15 are in inexistence. So the chances this is the real thing are quite extrordinary.
As is common with Chinese paintings throughout history, many artists copied the works of previous masters which can lead to a lot of confusion. There is even uncertaintly in many works attributed to famous masters from the Song period onwards like Mi Fei and Mu Chi. No one is absolutely certain if the works are in their own hand or the work of copyists.
