I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I found this page with a bunch of paintings by Taiwanese painter Der Jen. Simply incredible paintings.

Hi John,
If you like these beautiful Manchu girls, there is another painter who does portraits of Manchu girls, he is best known for the Forbidden City series of paintings. They are very western-style technique, classic oil painting style, and the theme is all Qing court life.
http://spanish.hanban.edu.cn/english/NM-e/146545.htm that shows only a few of the paintings.

There you can read a bit about him at the link above.

What a prolific artist. The girls he paints is all a variation on the same one but the detail he puts into the clothing, hair styles and the jewelry that he paints are incredible. This is a wonderful resource for anyone wanting to get ideas on the embroidery, how the hair pins hold the intricate hairdos and color schemes for putting together and authentic look.
What I also really like are the emotions that is suggested in the portraits.

I guess I am the dissenter here, but I find them rather disappointing, to be frank. They look very formulaic.

William O'Chee, I reckon you are absolutely right there. It's a fantasy world, its a Manchu fantasy vision that never really looked like that. It's the tradition of those Europeans who used to go to places like Turkey and paint sultan's harems and stuff, this kind of 'oriental fantasy'. Only in this case, it's people applying that 'oriental fantasy' technique to their own country's past. It is a formula, like this perfect polished sort of stereotype. I don't know about the Taiwanese artist JohnD posted, but the mainland one, Jiang Guofang, he's been a success abroad, he's had lots of exhibitions in Europe and elsewhere, because his 'China' is a fantasy vision that I guess its easy for people from a broad range of cultures to respond to.

Hi. I tend to agree these works are formula paintings and quite cheesy. Pretty and well painted and would appeal to those who have a lot of money but no great appreciation of art. They have a lot in common with commercial poster painting and they remind me of the old Chinese cigarette posters which are quite popular now.
