You can find out everything you would possibly want to know about Chinese gunpowder and firearms development by reading Joseph Needham's "Science and Civilisation in China" Volume 5 Part 7 (The Gunpowder Epic) which I have in my hand right now. It has more information and illustrations than you can shake a firelance at. Check it out at your nearest university library. I've read it cover to cover smile.gif

Unfortunately I found several heavy mistakes in J. Needham's accounts. They were done in respect of metal treatment in Song-Ming China and those mistakes made me to prefer original sources.

Best regards,

Alexey.

Check out this lousy and sloppy website of mine, which I have created a few years ago but never publicized on the Internet... If my interest picks up, I will enhance this site and create another one for Chinese cannons...

Dear Thomas,

What could you tell us about the steel blade in the butt of so called Rumi harquebuse from "Shenqi pu"?

I had to use pingying to re-type the line from "Zhongguo junqi shi":

"Chuangwei yu gangren. Diren fujin shi ji zhizhuan lai zi zhanmadao yung".

I am sorry if I have typed it wrongly but I had to re-tune myself from Korean reading to Chinese one. The translation is:

"In the butt is a steel blade. When enemies come close take it out and turn the weapon to use it as zhanmadao".

Best regards,

Alexey.
