Can anyone here help me out? I went to Guoxue.com, and I was fine on the first few 'pages,' but when I clicked on Hongloumeng studies I didn't get characters anymore. Instead I got a bunch of ... ah...formatting symbols(?) (I'm at a somewhat meager level of computer-savvy). Is it possible to get Hanzi out of that, or am I just stuck?

Thanks to anyone.

Uhm... I didn't encounter this problem. I think you need to clear your cache & cookies, or encode IE in chinese.

Just found this gem: http://weber.ucsd.edu/~dkjordan/chin/china.html

David K. Jordan, an anthropologist, has some very useful resources on various aspects of Chinese history and culture here, including imperial reign tables, outlines to territorial administrative units, the imperial examination system, philosophical terms, and an interactive program explaining the Five Phases (Wu Xing). Check it out!!

Just found this blog by a very learned student of Chinese history. It contains articles (all in Chinese) focusing on aspects of Age of Fragmentation and ethnic history, particularly relating to Central Asia. Very balanced and well-researched articles - well worth a look!

I found this site the other day. It's the contents of an entire book. The bit I've read is interesting. It would be great if someone verified the portrayal of society in Zhou times.

Thanks Wang Yun,

I wish there was more work by Japanese scholars available in English. They have been involved in Chinese studies far longer than anyone in the West. There's bound to be some good insights there.

Then again, more translations of Chinese works would be good too. yes.gif

I found this educated website about half a year ago. It contains famous chinese novels, including RTK, Water Margin and Journey To The West. It's worth checking I guess.

http://www.china-on-site.com/

It is in e-comic style with a picture on every page. The bad point about this web is it takes quite sometimes to load (since every page contains an illustrated picture). But for users with higher speed i-connection, it won't matter (mine is still using 56.6 Kbps connection). I have read 2 stories of them (RTK & Water Margin). I haven't read others yet, though I wish to.

u r welcome Pattie rolleyes.gif I'm glad if I can contribute something worthy for this forum. BTW, I happened to browse Youtube and found these great videos about Qin Shi Huang.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcunDFfmxMQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRizdgGDzbI

The first one lasts for about one & half minutes, but it takes quite sometime to load. I prefer the second one, more illustrative. It lasts about 9 and half minutes.

Has anyone ever heard about "The Rape Of Nanking" ?

Perhaps this information can be useful :

1937 - 1938 The Rape Of Nan King
This was one of the Black History in China. It was rarely mentioned, but it had been written as one of the history in modern China.

It started the day Japanese captured Nanjing (or Nanking). As it's named, the history recorded that approximately 80,000 of Nanjing female civilian and girls were raped. I got this complete site, together with pictures (some of the pictures are quite irritating for me). It's worth checking at.

Reminder : Don't read this while you r about to go to sleep or having your meal icon15.gif

Ah-ha, about that. I came across this interesting site where it tried to disprove the event of Rape of Nanking by disproving the reliability of the famous Rape of Nanking pictures such as the baby left on its own in the middle of a warzone, and it said that photographers actually put the baby there to make the picture more agonising than it was in fact. And a picture of the japanese leading the women to be executed, was actually leading them to the fields to harvest food...I found that site interesting, anyone know what I mean of it?

Analon : I heard about the story about 10 years ago. But I was kindda forgotten. I started recalling and searching for resources again about a year ago. Right after the news about the Japanese were apologizing for their crimes during pre-WWI to post WWII in Asia.

Do you know how there are those (usually far right reactionaries) who say the Holocaust never existed by arguing 6 million bodies would've been nearly impossible to dispose?

Same concept here.

As far as the history of Taiwan and Okinawa before the 1700s, what does Chinese historians records about it? Were Taiwan and Okinawa ever once was a vassal State or part of any Chinese dynasty? So far, history have not mention anything about that ( unless I am reading the wrong history materials?, Taiwan was siad to be a colony of the Dutch before the Qing invaded, while Okinawa was an independent State before the SHoguns of mainland Japan invaded ), does anyone know or what does the history base on Chinese scholars or historians say?

I was searching for some info about Wang Hailing. Unfortunately, I was only able to find one article about her at china.org.cn. But, on the right side of that page I found a section called Archives. In it were the following links:
