Moon

Her candle-light is silvery on her chill bright screen.
Her little silk fan is for fireflies....
She lies watching her staircase cold in the moon,
And two stars parted by the River of Heaven.

This poem was one of Du Mu's poems and was written during the Tang period. It describes the beauty of an autumn night and the weather under the glitter of the stars, representing the romance of the Weaving Lady and the Cowherd.

Although not in the field of ancient poetry this is my definite favourite poem ! By a contemporary poet whose name is Sheng Zhao. It is long and should be recited with strong emotions. Read it for yourself!

(not my translation)

The endless river eastward flows;
With its huge waves are gone all those
Gallant heroes of bygone years.
West of the ancient fortress years
Red Cliff where General Zhou Yu won his early fame
When the Three Kingdoms were in flame.
Jugged rocks tower in the air
And swashing waves beat on the air
Rolling up a thousand heaps of snow.
To match the hills and the river so fair,
How many heroes brave of yore
Made a great show!

OR

The Yangtze flows east
Washing away
A thousand ages of great men
West of the ramparts --
People say --
Are the fables Red Cliffs of young Chou of the Three Kingdoms
Rebellious rocks pierce the sky
Frightening waves rip the bank
The backwash churns vast snowy swells --
River and mountains like a painting
how many heroes passed them, once ...

Think back to those years, Chou Yu --
Just married to the younger Chiao --
Brave, brilliant
With plumed fan, silk kerchief
Laughed and talked
While masts and oars vanished to flying ash and smoke!
I roam through ancient realms
Absurdly moved
Turn gray too soon --
A man's life passes like a dream --
Pour out a cup then, to the river, and the moon

Each year, it dies, then flourishes again.
It's burnt but not destroyed by prairie fires,
When spring winds blow they bring it back to life.

Its emerald green overruns the ruined town.
Again I see my noble friend depart,
I find I'm crowded full of parting's feelings.

(A fiery chain appeared in the skies all of a sudden, it looks as if the Jade Emperor wants a cigarette. If not, then why would there be a chain fo fire?)

No favorites, as there are simply too many wonderful poems, but here are an old and a new. Both are simple, but poignant, and these poor translations don't begin to do them justice:

---

"Sky Clear Sand - Autumn Reflections"
Ma Zhiyuan (Yuan dynasty)

Withered vine, old tree, returning crow
Small bridge, flowing water, someone’s home
Ancient road, west wind, thinning horse
The evening sun sinks into the west
A broken-hearted man at heaven’s edge.

*"broken-hearted" = homesick

是永不漫灭的回忆;

These matters --
Are forever inextinguishable memories;
Within a bright moon's garden,
Beneath the vine leaves,
Upon mother's knee.

QUOTE
Zhounan (The Odes of Zhou and the South)

Guan! Guan! Cry the fish hawks
on sandbars in the river:
a mild-mannered good girl,
fine match for the gentleman.

A ragged fringe is the floating-heart,
left and right we trail it:
that mild-mannered good girl,
awake, asleep, I search for her.

I search but cannot find her,
awake, asleep, thinking of her,
endlessly, endlessly,
turning, tossing from side to side.

A ragged fringe is the floating-heart,
left and right we pick it:
the mild-mannered good girl,
harp and lute make friends with her.

A ragged fringe is the floating-heart,
left and right we sort it:
the mild-mannered good girl,
bell and drum delight her.

[NOTES]This is a love poem, describing a man of the royal family in love with a girl collecting edible water plants , and his efforts to court her..

Zhounan: (The Odes of Zhou and the South) In the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Lord Dan of Zhou (reigned 1063-1057 B.C.) made Luo City (today's Luoyang City in Henan Province) its capital and from there he ruled over other dukes. The poems in Zhounan are that from Zhou and the states south of Zhou, covering an area of today's Henan and Hubei Provinces.

the one when Li Po talks about getting drunk:

"Drinking Along by the Moon" (version 1?)

花間一壺酒。 Amongst the flowers is a pot of wine;
獨酌無相親。 I pour alone but with no friend at hand;
舉杯邀明月。 So I lift the cup to invite the shining moon;
Along with my shadow, a fellowship of three.
月既不解飲。 The moon understands not the art of drinking;
影徒隨我身。 The shadow gingerly follows my movements;
暫伴月將影。 Still I make the moon and the shadow my company;
To enjoy the springtime before too late.
我歌月徘徊。 The moon lingers while I am singing;
我舞影零亂。 The shadow scatters while I am dancing;
醒時同交歡。 We share the cheers of delight when sober;
醉後各分散。 We separate our ways after getting drunk;
永結無情遊。 Forever will we keep this unfettered friendship;
Til we meet again far in the Milky Way.

James Liu's translation:

A white steed decked with a golden halter
Galloped past towards the north west.
'Who is the rider?' I enquired from a by-stander.
'A knight errant from the north' was the reply.
'He left his native district when he was young,
And spread his fame across the distant desert.
He always carries a fine sturdy bow
With arrows of bramble wood, long and short.
Pulling the string, he hits the target on the left;
Shooting from the right, he hits it again.
Looking up, he shoots an ape in flight;
Bending down, he hits the bull's-eye once more.
He is more agile than a monkey,
And as fierce as a leopard or dragon.
When alarms came from the frontier
That barbarian troops had made repeated raids,
And when a call to arms was heard from the north,
He mounted his steed and reached the frontier fort.
He rode on right into the land of the Huns [Xiongnu],
Holding the Mongol [Xianbei] tribes in high disdain.
He threw himself before the pointed swords
Without giving a thought to his own life.
He did not even worry about his parents,
Let alone his children and his wife.
His name entered the register of heroes;
His heart had no room for personal feelings.
He risked his life at a time of national disaster,
And regarded death merely as coming home.'

I like Na Lan Xing De's poems and Li Yi's poems. Na Lan lived in Qing Dynasty. Though he is a Manchurian, he absorbed Han's culture, and developed his own style. Li Yi is the last king of Southern Tang, he was so famous of his poems. The same as Li Yi, Chen Shubao is also an emperor, but he is a poet rather than a good politician, for his vulnerable Chen Dynasty was defeated by Sui Dynasty. When refer to the emperors who are not well known for their political contributions, I can list some below:

1. Chen Shubao: Chen Dynasty, poem
2. Li Yi: Southern Tang kingdom, poem
3. Song Huizong: Northern Song Dynasty, Chinese painting
4. Zhu Houcong: Ming Dynasty, Taoism
5. Zhu Youxiao: Ming Dynasty, Chinese Architect

A poem by Matteo Ricci, dated 1601, and most certainly sung in the Ming court (accompanied on a harpsichord)

Here's a modern english translation

The shepherd and the hill

A shepherd boy fell sad one day,
Hating the hillside on which he stood;
He thought a distant hill he saw
More beautiful by far,
And that going there would wipe away his sorrows.

So he set off to that distant hill,
But as he drew near to it
It looked less good than it had from afar.

O shepherd boy, shepherd boy,
How can you expect to transform yourself
By changing your dwelling place?

If you move away can you leave yourself behind?
Sorrow and joy sprout in the heart.
If the heart is peaceful, you'll be happy everywhere,
If the heart is in turmoil, every place brings sorrow.
A grain of dust in your eye
Brings discomfort speedily;
How can you then ignore this sharp awl
That pierces your heart?

If you yearn for things outside yourself
You will never obtain what you are seeking.
Why not put your own heart in order
And find peace on your own hillside? Old and new writers alike give this advice:
There's no advantage to roaming outside,
Keep the heart inside, for
That brings the profit.

Whose translation is this? It is beautiful.

It is from The Jade Mountain: A Chinese Anthology (Being 300 Poems of the T'ang Dynasty, 618-906), translated by Kiang Kang-hu and Witter Bynner. The book was first published in 1929 and has been reprinted many times since. Bynner was also a fairly well-known poet at the time. Many consider The Jade Mountain to be his best verse.

This isn't exactly a poem I think, but its in RTK.

Mao: The eighteen armies of the confrederate lords failed to kill Dong Zhuo. One Diao Chan sufficed. Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu could not conquer Lό Bu. Diao Chan, alone, was able to. The couch was her battleground, cosmetics her armor, glances her spear and dagger, frowns and smiles her bow and arrows. With pleasing words and humble phrases she arranged surprise attacks and ambushes - a female general truly to be feared and respected.

Oh,where have you got these words from?
I am shamed to know these words for my first time...It's really Mao's saying...

Below Chinese words are checked from internet,
I think they are perhaps the original chinese...

The rushing rain has ceased.
Lifting my eyes,
Towards the sky I let out a battle cry;
My blood is boiling.
Thirty years: rank and honour, just so much dust;
Eight hundred leagues: travelling with the moon and clouds.
Do not let it slip away;
When a young man"s head turns grey,
Regret will be too late.

The national insult
Is yet to be avenged;
Your servants" shame:
When will it be erased?
Let us ride the long chariots
To crush those mountain strongholds.
Glorious quest: to feast on the flesh of the invaders.
We laugh and chat and quench our thirst with Tartar blood.
Let us start
To take back our rivers and mountains,
And report to the Heavenly Palace.

Magpie bridge Immortal

Delicate clouds drift fleetingly,
Shooting star reluctantly (grudgingly) fades (departs),
Silver virtue (Han character) is very remote and obscure.
Gold wind (Feng Huang) and jade dew drop, a fortuitous (chance) meeting,
Convenient rendezvous, but the world is insecure.

Soft emotions flow like water,
Celestial (Excellent) interlude would be like a dream
Patient caution (consideration) is like a magpie bridge that provides a way out.
Strong emotions if a long relationship is desired,
Then again it could mean I must face twilight forever.

Hi guys,

my first post on CHF. Here's my favourite Chinese poem, from Li Bai

The bright moon lifts from the Mountain of Heaven
In an infinite haze of cloud and sea,
And the wind, that has come a thousand miles,
Beats at the Jade Pass battlements....
China marches its men down Baideng Road
While Tartar troops peer across blue waters of the bay....
And since not one battle famous in history
Sent all its fighters back again,
The soldiers turn round, looking toward the border,
And think of home, with wistful eyes,
And of those tonight in the upper chambers
Who toss and sigh and cannot rest

I find it one of the most amazing pieces of poetry I've ever heard...

This is the poem referring to the legend of the Weaving Girl and the Cowherd and also one of my favorites. I will also try to translate it.

Fairies (Immortals) of the Magpie Bridge (The name of the song/tune)

Delicate clouds played tricks.

Shooting stars delivered their regrets.

The Milky Way is too far to pass.

Golden wind and jade dews met just once,

and it was far better than meeting many times in the human world. (2)

Tender passions are like water,

and the good time is like dreams.

(I/we) couldn't bear to look at the Magpie Bridge, the road to return home (to leave).

When the love between two people could last forever,

to be together day in and day out is not necessary.

(1) 银汉 is another term for the Milky Way. Chinese term for the Milky Way is the Silver River.
I think it refered to one of the legend about the meeting of the Weaving Girl and the Cowherd in Heaven when the Cowherd was the Golden Boy (金童). Also, it means just one meeting in a long while between the two lovers are better than many human couples who are together every day, but whose heart do not belong to each other.
