Can anyone help with information about visual identification of rank in the 7th & 8th century. I don't just mean the officials and the military but also the nobility: prince, marquis etc.. Finding details for the ming and qing seems to be fairly straightforward, the information is readily available, but the tang is a different matter.

So if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be really grateful....

Can you please explain what you mean by 'visual identification' ? Do you mean their dress code, any badges etc? Or are you just looking for imperial official titles during Tang dynasty?

Anything that distinguishes a man's rank or title when you see him. For example, colours of robes, insignia badges, headwear, ornaments. In other words, anything that would tell you that this man was a 1st class duke (gong), or a viscount (zi); and conversely, how could you tell which of the nine grades an official belonged to by looking at him?

I think I'm ok for the names of imperial titles.

Have a look at the Tongdian (通典) in the section under Lidian (禮典). It has some answers to what you are looking for. I don't know if an English version is available though.
