He fought against the turks, but somthing happened and he ended up becoming a civilan, I'm not sure really.

Xue Rengui (薛仁贵) was famous for his campaign against Koguryo (Korea) when Tang led an invasion in allies with Silla against this northern korean kingdom.

In 666, the Tang central court sent senior General Li Ji (李勣) (a famous Tang general) with Xue Renggui to lead an attack against Koguryo. This time they made a smooth advance. Fuyu was an important strategic location with tens of thousands of Koguryo guards. Leading only 2000 soldiers, Xue charged into the town killing many of the guards. After Fuyu fell, over 40 other Koguryo towns surrendered in succession.

In 668, the Tang sacked Pyongyang, Koguryo's capital. The Andong Military Command (安东都护府) was set up there with Xue Rengui as the governor. Before long, the Tang withdrew and Silla unified the Korean peninsular.

(614- 683 AD), Tang's famous general. He's called Li and originated from Longmen (today's Shanxi Hejin). He excelled in horse riding and horse archery. During the late years of the Zhenguan reign (Emperor Taizong's time), he joined the Tang army. At that time, Tang was attacking Koguryo (in Korea). The Turks fled and the Tang chased after them and captured Yehu and his brothers (Turks leader). After this campaign, he continued to led Tang's campaign against Koguryo, and after sacking Pyongyang, was later appointed as Youwei Great General plus Andong commandery's governor


In 670 AD, the Tubo (Tibetans) raided China. Emperor Gaozong assigned Xue Rengui as Luosa Path Infantry Great Commander, Guo Daifeng as second General to defend against Tubo's attack. Because of Guo Daifeng not listening to his command, they were routed by the Tubo and suffered major loss. Xue Renggui was forced to retreat to Dafeichuan, and was forced to buy peace with the Tubo. He was demoted to be a civilian.



In 681 AD, he was re-used by Empero Gaozong, appointed as Zhuzhou's military chief, re-assigned as right vanguard general. In 682 AD, Tujue (Turk) Ahsideyuan rebelled against Tang and he led the Tang's forces to attack Tujue. The Turks, after hearing that Xue was the general, retreated and was defeated by the Tang.
In 683 AD, Xue passed away.

It was his defeat by Tubo (Tibetans) that he was demoted to be a civilian.

I think the one that should be blamed for the failure in an attack against Tibetan was Guo-Daifeng.He was thinking himself as vice commander in chief so he did not listen to any of Xue-rengui advice and took most of the Tang troops charge into Tibetan territory and got ambushed by the Tibetan army.

And i think before suffering defeat,Xue-rengui manage to defeat the combination of Tibetan-Tuyuhun force some where around qing-hai or was it wu-hai with his heavy calvary even though he was out numbered by them.

Just some clarifications about the above sentence. Xue Rengui's given name was actually Li (hence Xue Li), and Rengui was his personal name (i.e. chosen by himself when he came of age). Like some other famous personalities in Chinese history, he came to be better known by his personal name.

Xue Rengui's hometown was Longmen - incidentally the same as the great Western Han historian Sima Qian.

Actually, if you refer to our earlier thread about the Tiele, you'll find that they are actually the Toquz Oghuz and not the Tujue.

The Tubo forces that fought him was far larger, by more than 2 folds, recorded as 200,000 in size, the Tubo treated this invasion as a serious menace, while to the Tang it was just an expedition altough a large one.

Yeah.. they are probably the ancestor of Turks in Turkey right?

What havn't been meantioned yet is that Xue is also involved in many novels and myths, he is very much like the Yang Jia Jiang (Yang family generals) story of the Song ...there is a novel called 東爭西爭記 which is a novel loosly based on Xue's offensive in Korea and his (made up) son's campign in the west.

There are stories (and tv series) about Xue Ren Gui's son, Xue Ding Shan. Do you guys have any historical info about him? Thanks.

I think there is a lot of myth surrounding Xue Ren Gui, like he needed to eat big portion of rice enough to feed 20 adult males and had the power equally to 20 adult males. There was also a story that his alleged son (I'm not sure if he was Xue Ren Gui's son at all) Xue Ding Shan mistaken his father as a tiger and shoot him while they were hunting.
A schoolmate of mine claimed to be a descendant of Xue Ren Gui, but he was so tiny short boy. (We were about 17 years old that time, so I don't expect he will outgrow me now)
I've searched the web for more historical information to no avail, I hope Yun or other forumers could help us to clarify this.

Hi Guys, i'm really curious with this Xue RenGui Character, coz i can't find enough information regarding his background history. i just know that he is famous general during early Tang dynasty, he helps Tang TaiZong & GaoZong againts Goguryeo, always wearing white robe etc...(from chinese opera story)

what i really wanna i know is, is he really fights againts Gai SuWen or Yeon Gaesomun? then i really confused coz some peoples said Gai SuWen is Khitan Warrior not Goguryeo, some korean also stated that Xue RenGui (Seol inGui) is a Khitan not Han??? which one is true? i always thought Xue RenGui is Han's who become Tang's General helps TaiZong & GaoZong repelled Goguryeo and kicks Gaesomun a** (wupps sorry for strong words...)

I've read some novel about the feat of this general Xue RenGui. Okay, it was called by different pronounciation because of the dialect, but still the same character. Of course like all chinese story, the plot has be come a myth with all kind of God involve in the war.
But there are three generation stories about Xue RenGui.
The first part is about the attact to the East. Now I know it was an attact to the Korean land and the second part was an attact to the West, which could be the attact to the Turk.
The second part mostly the story of his supposedly son Xue DingSan and his exploit with Fan LiHua. The story was romantized to exploit the love story between this two.
The third part was actually about his grandson Xue Gong, how his exploit eventually cause all his family member to be wiped out by the emperor and eventually managed to get back the family honour.
I am not sure whether this is real history or just plain imagination of some writer who utilize the history and bend it according to their will. Unfortunately, this kind of novel is very famous and most of the time gives you a much better understanding (be that is wrong) about the history of China.
