If I not mistaken,it was one of the ancient armor;continued to be up to the times of Taiping rebellion........................

So,what are the factors?

They are easier to make?

Less complicated than any armor?

Defence against ranged weaponry or at least to an extent;bladed weapons?

And how many layers they come up to protect the wearer?

Any there many variations of leather armor?

Well, Chinese rawhide is VERY thick, so I imagine leather/rawhide armour would give fairly good protection, while still being flexible and lightweight.

Other than the rhino hide, what other raw hide they would use?

When the last rhino died ! biggrin.gif

Seriously leather armour was mostly from cattle/ox/yak hides.

When and how to wearing leather armor is depended on the situation.

Wearing leather armor against bladed-carrying opposition is purposeless in most cases. Depending on the weight & design , it might obstruct the mobility of the wearer.
