Full Version: Chinese mortars?

I'm looking for some information on Chinese mortars, I'd prefer to learn about the native designs. As I've already researched European types extensively. Turnbulls, "Siege weapons of the far east" gives very little space to Chinese mortars, but credits Korea with having the best technology in this area.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is a mortar? Is it some kind of modern cannon (siege weapon)?

To simplify, the mortar is a high trajectory cannon.

Assuming you are using the 17th-19th C European definition of 'mortar', short barreled cannon, firing at a high angle to lob large explosive shells into an enemy position. I'm not certain that Chinese troops used such weapons. There are bombs/grenades cast by catapults, rocket incendiaries, even short barreled cannon, but nothing like say an English Civil War mortar.

Perhaps Liang Jieming or Duncan Head can think of something.

I do believe the Mortar is called the "Gao She Pao" 高射炮
They're rather useful where direct fire is not an option.

And...they're different from howitzers, forgot how though.
