Very intersting topic, but not much understood in western literature.

Anyone know the origins of the 18 Arms of Wushu, and as to if the term "18 arms of Wushu" was used more to refer to the Northern or Southern Chinese Martial arts (wushu), or used for both as a whole?

2 origins known to me:
2nd/17th books of Water Margins 水滸傳
chap. 7 in Cui Wei's Records of Northern Campaings 萃衛北征錄 by Hua Yue 華嶽
Populare since Ming/Qing dynasties, and probably more categories of weaponry, not arms per se!

I thought the dao and jian were shorter than the other 16 weapons.

Right, dao and jian are swords, while those in the pictures seem to be polearms...
